Coup De Main is pleased to share with you a few thoughts from GABRIELLE SIMMERS, a mastermind team member behind the beautiful fabrication company that is, ESTHER DIAMOND.

As a company that brings succulent art and design into everyday life, I have major respect for their innovation and taste, in which they have executed their fabulous homeware pieces-of-art.

Esther Diamond are collaborating with HAFELE showroom this Saturday for URBIS DESIGNDAY! Read below to see what we can expect to see this weekend in terms of their installation at Hafele...

COUP DE MAIN: How did your involvement come about with Urbis Designday?
GABRIELLE SIMMERS: Esther Diamond has been keen to get involved with Urbis Designday as it is a key design event on the NZ calendar, and 2011 is our first UDD appearance. We are great admirers of Urbis magazine and the event is superbly managed and best of all is a lot of fun, so we are very happy to be involved.

CDM: How is the interpretation of 'State Of Transition' for your installation going?

GABRIELLE SIMMERS: Our take on 'State of Transition' is to examine the process our artists go through in their transition from their core practice to the process of putting 'art on fabric' for Esther Diamond. We have entitled our installation 'High Art to Low Art' which is a playful, humorous look at this topic. Each artist has produced limited edition prints on fabric on the theme which will hang alongside their original artworks - on loan from major dealer gallery and private collections. This mash-up of enormously valuable large scale original artworks alongside humble tea towels and cushions brings to mind the many and various thought processes an artist must wrestle with both in their everyday work and with their design hats on for Esther Diamond. The colour palette is vibrant and fun and the casual atmosphere is designed as a play on the serious gallery environment.

CDM: Can you give us any hints as to what we can expect to see on the day?
GABRIELLE SIMMERS: A lot of fabric, a lot of art, a lot of colour, and a very relaxed and playful space.

CDM: So, Esther Diamond is an Art Fabrication company... can you tell us more about how you started?

GABRIELLE SIMMERS: Esther Diamond was founded in 2004 and works with leading NZ artists to put art on fabric. The idea behind Esther Diamond is to bring art into everyday life by screen-printing artwork onto cushions, tea towels, bed linen and other homeware products.

CDM: What is your favourite part of your job?
GABRIELLE SIMMERS: Receiving new artwork. It's such an honour to work with such talented artists and to gain insight into their creative process.

CDM: Can you share some wise words for the people that are weighing up whether or not to come to Urbis Designday?

GABRIELLE SIMMERS: It's my favourite event all year - I love it! Great people, lots of amazing installations by fabulous designers, and lots of free and delicious food and wine - it's a perfect day out! Dress up or dress down but make sure you go!
