Actress Emma Stone takes on the role of an unpopular high school girl named Olive Penderghast. After a little white lie about losing her virginity gets out, her life starts to play out like Hester Prynne’s in 'The Scarlet Letter', (a novel by Nathaniel Hawthorne) which she is currently studying in school.

The classic 'life imitating art' scenario. A coincidence? I think not.

She then decides to use the rumor mill to further her social and financial standing, fast-tracking her way to becoming one of the most popular and hated girls in school until she unexpectedly starts falling for Woodchuck Todd (Penn Badgley).
