![]() Pessimists of the world, rejoice! Wait, that's a contradiction in terms. Pessimists of the world, be slightly less pessimistic. If you're into the darker side of comedy, CAREY MARX is your beacon in sea of pop-whimsy. Overlooking the popular idea that joy can be found everywhere you look, Carey stares straight into the world and sees what a lot of us have seen, a place that is much worse than it should be. Not content to ignore the horribleness like most everyone else does, Carey Marx lives in it, poking a big stick at the carcass of absurdity that makes up a lot of modern-day life and opinion. He's got the style down pat, a voice and swagger that creates the effect of a drunk child, albeit a devilish one that has no filter when it comes to speaking its mind. Marx is a cheeky intellectual who finds great personal joy in penetrating stupid peoples arguments about seemingly inane things that might just be the reason the world is falling apart. A lot of the stories and references are UK based, and they more or less translate, but it's the ideas behind them that are universal and where the comedic gold lies. Warning: this is not a first-date appropriate show. Every taboo subject you can think of is breached with a grin by Marx. You can be shocked, sure, but it's not offensive, and that's the important thing to note. This was the first night in a short 5-night run of 'Doom Gloom Boom', and it was a bit patchy, but Carey assured us that because of our presence, the rest of the audiences in the run will have a much better time. That's as good a back-handed compliment as you can expect from the master of black comedy. If you have ever looked at the world and been overcome by the apparent boom of doom and gloom (ah, so that's what the title means), have no fear, you are not alone - Carey Marx has also done it and he has found a voice for those feelings. It's a voice that let's you laugh at the dark stuff. |
