![]() ZOE LYONS is influential. And sometimes she even feels that way. That's the gist behind 'Miss Machismo', a look at the times we feel like we can conquer the world, and more often the times we feel the world might conquer us. Plus, according to Zoe, 'Machismo' is a cool word, much cooler than it's feminine counterpart 'Marianismo'. As this is Zoe's first full show in New Zealand, Miss Machismo acts as an introduction to the fast rising star of UK comedy. And from what I could hear, she is hilarious. Again, the 'new' Transmission Room situated in Elliott Stables acts as a foil for our international guests. Coupled with her winter cold she seemed so chuffed to have, Zoe's fast-talking and thick accent were not met kindly by the echoey, amateurish sound set-up. It's difficult to give a joke the laugh it deserves when you have to concentrate so hard to understand it. But once you get used to the set up, there is a lot of comedy gold to be found in Zoe's gleefully self-deprecating charm. Having woken up one morning to discover she had been voted the 81st most influential gay in Britain, Zoe is filled with confidence and takes on the responsibility of influencing with great gusto. Miss Machismo is filled with material that takes an equal-opportunity stance on mocking everything and everyone. The most biting jokes are saved for celebrities and powerful people who have too much machismo, whose scary level of confidence and influence are a ripe target for Zoe's comedy take-downs. Throughout the show, Zoe turns the mocking back on herself, and does so with a smile. It's clear that she is having a ball on stage, her enthusiasm is winning and she just looks like a lot of fun to hang out with. Even if it's hard to understand her, you can't help but like her. |
