![]() Man, JAMIE BOWEN can talk. He talks fast, he talks loose, and he talks with a zestfulness any after-school TV presenter would kill for. Late night at the Basement is the perfect time and place for the hour of manic comedy Jamie presents to a willing audience. The 'concrete' in the charming title refers to both physical concrete and metaphorical concrete. This allows for hilarious anecdotes about Jamie's youthful passions for extreme sports (if you can call rollerblading extreme), and also larger scale ideas about life and the maturing that comes with every obstacle bested. 'A Rational Fear Of Concrete' is a show about getting back up when you fall down hard. But don't expect a whole lot of earnestness and heart tugging emotions, this is a show aimed squarely for the laughs. Tonight's show has Jamie shotgunning through stories and jagging off on short, sharp tangents into the freaky, while still ably handling bizarre, but nicely timed heckles from people in the audience. Then there's a gear-changing musical interlude that features some of the classiest music I have ever heard created with a ukulele on any stage, let alone at a comedy show. Concrete is a constantly surprising show, delivered with a slick joyfulness that keeps you entertained and always wondering what's next. Jamie can be shocking in an over the top dirty way - most notably in the musical section - but if you can handle that stuff, it's all part of the fun. He has a cheeky glint in his eye and a delectable taste for rousing excitement, he is a live wire and hugely talented. A stand out local comedian; the man is a star ready to be discovered. |
