AVATAR. The last airbender - not to be confused with James Cameron's 'Avatar' - has been my reason for waking up at 8:30am on Saturday mornings for the last little while. It's an animated series that set in an 'Asian influenced world' filled with martial arts and characters that can manipulate the elements. It was a huge success for Nickelodeon in America.

Sounds geeky but it's right up my alley.

ANYWAY it's been made into a live adapatation; a film to be exact that'll be directed by M. Night Shyamalan (he directed the Bruce Willis hit 'The Sixth Sense' which had an ending that shocked us all!...I was shocked at least).

There was controversy from the get go as none of the actors picked for the main roles were Asian, despite it being a heavily Asian-themed movie.

I get that it's a BIG film to pull off and there are A LOT of fans to please.

HOWEVER can I point out that Dev Patel (of 'Slumdog Millionaire' fame) is playing one of the lead roles, Zuko - the Prince of the Fire Nation? Last time I checked, India was a part of Asia.

Let's not get our panties in a twist over the number of Asians in the film. This isn't 'Where's Wally' and chances are you won't be counting when you see it.

As you can tell, I'm not so fussed. I'm still trying to wrap my lips around the director's last name.

Also starring in the movie is Twilight's Jackson Rathbone who plays Sokka.

Playing Katara, Sokka's water bending sister is Nicole Peltz.

The lead role of Aang, the Avatar goes to an untapped resource - Noah Ringer. A new comer who happens to be fluent in karate. How convenient.

And NZ's very own Cliff Curtis scored the role as Fire Lord Ozai!

Here's a taste of things to come. 'The Last Airbender' is scheduled for release start of July 2, 2010.
