I generally don’t sleep very well. I seem to have a lot of very exciting dreams, like being chased by an angry mob, or more recently, dodging 747’s that were falling out of the sky. It gives me an adrenaline rush and I’ll wake up with my heart pumping, which, as you can imagine, does not make for a relaxing night's sleep. I envy my girlfriend who can fall asleep in 5 minutes and requires only 6 hours of sleep per night. Anyway, I was lying awake the other night thinking about what I should write for this guest-blog and thought I would try to explain lucid dreaming.

Lucid dreaming is when you become conscious and self-aware in your dreams. I had heard about it sometime last year but was then reminded about it after I had seen 'Inception'. I like the idea of being able to control my dreams; I’ve had a few where I’ve been aware that I was dreaming but still unable to control what happened in that dream.

You can invoke lucid dreams by training yourself to constantly do ‘reality checks’ which is the act of checking whether you are awake or not. The idea is that if you can make it into a habit it will eventually be done at random during a dream, which will help to turn it into a lucid dream. A good reality check to do is to pinch your nose and try to breathe out. You’ll still be able to breathe if you’re dreaming. Try that now. Not dreaming? Good. Another good one is to look at some text or a digital clock and see if it changes. Look away and then back – if it changes then you are dreaming (don’t use your Twitter feed for this). Sometimes light switches won’t work or you won’t be able to see yourself in a mirror.

Once you realize you are dreaming you may become excited and wake up. You need to stay calm. Just look around, try to touch or smell something. Try to use all of your senses. If you manage to do this you will be in a stable lucid dream. Congratulations! Feel free to fly around or start a fight with a bunch of guys or pay a visit to that hot girl off 'Mad Men'...
