When I first started thinking about what to write for this blog, I found myself falling into a deeply envious state of my own past travels as my mind took me on a journey back through the cobbled streets of Copenhagen, the sandy combed beaches of L.A. and the graffiti-scattered alleyways of Bristol. So to avoid falling into a mildly depressed state this Winter following the knowledge that my travels wont begin for at least another year, I decided to put pen to paper and focus on something more tangible for me at this point in time. I got chatting to Donielle; a stylist from Stephen Marr Hair Design, over lunch one day at The Department Store in Auckland, who informed me of her jewellery in the making. Now I have a deep love affair with jewellery, so to say I was excited in finding out more to share it with you all, would be an understatement. Here is a behind-the-scenes look into the making of ‘EYES OF COMMON’ jewellery. With a successful career as a stylist at Stephen Marr hair design and as drummer for home‐grown NZ band Midnight Youth respectively, Donielle Brooke and Aidan Bartlett know a thing or two about pulling together a visually interesting look. So it should come as no surprise to us that these two decided to create their own jewellery label mid-last year. “Since then we haven’t looked back, we’re loving all the different processes in doing this.”
Their jewellery has the uncanny ability to add instant sex‐appeal to anything from vintage to modern, hippie to city-slicker. The collection is inspired by the talented duo’s ‘sporadic encounters’ of inspiration and daydreaming and features pieces such as delicate kiss rings, peace bones, staircases and hawk skulls all made of silver. “We’ve always been in love with jewellery and the expression it gives you. The way it feels and can make you. When we couldn’t find what we wanted after a lot of searching, that’s when we saw it as a sign to start something ourselves and once we’d made that decision, that was it.” Quick questions with Donielle and Aidan:
RIKKE: Where will the range be sold and when can we expect to see it on shelves? AIDAN: At the moment that’s all in the works, but hopefully our online shop should be up soon! (shop.eyesofcommon.com) RIKKE: Who is the jewellery made for? AIDAN: That’s a hard one, I guess we’d love to think that everyone could find something in there...
RIKKE: What is your favourite piece from 'Eyes Of Common' and why? AIDAN: We love each and every piece so this is a hard one too‐ but if we absolutely had to pick on, I’d say the Staircase ring. It may sound corny/cliché, whatever your take on it is, but the fact remains that Donielle and Aidan are an inspirational pair, who have taken their dreams to the next level, and no doubt success will follow them wherever they go. They are a reminder to us all, that we shouldn’t take each day for granted, and instead we should act upon our dreams to become an actress, graphic designer/stylist, and full time philanthropist TODAY... well those are my dreams... what are yours?
