JAKE BAILEY the make-up artist for the 'GHD' SCARLET campaign photoshoot - featuring KATY PERRY - walks us through the look he created...

Q: Talk us through the two Snow White looks you created on Katy Perry for the ghd campaign...

A: The Snow White fire escape look was a very pretty look. We did a little bit of sparkle on the eyes and really beautiful dramatic lashes as usual. We did a really long, slightly rounded brow as opposed to the typical arch to keep it period, the arch is very 50’s so we rounded it out and drew it out to make it a little more 20’s. The lipstick was Ruby Woo by MAC, which is a really classic, matte red. Really pretty, glowy, pink cheeks with highlights on the cheekbones. She’s Snow White so we made her really pale, she's supposed to be really glowy and fresh and innocent, but a flapper! The shot in front of the mirror was more...Snow Black! That one was my favourite, it was the most fun. It took the longest for sure! That was a really 20’s, femme fatale look, super smoky. We had a silver highlight on the lid, and red glitter, and an aubergine shadow around the smoke. There was a lot that went into it; two rows of lashes, top and bottom. We did the pencil thin brow, very Jean Harlow, typical late 20’s / early 30’s and the lips were a deep wine colour, really glossy. It was really fun, she was totally transformed and the hair was amazing and the dress was amazing... Amazing, amazing, amazing! It was really fun, but it took two and a half hours!

Q: Describe a day in the life of Jake Bailey...
A: There’s no such thing as a typical day! Every day is different, it really is. Every once in a while I’ll have a gig that runs for 6 or 7 days in the studio and it’s fun because you get to pretend like you have a real job! That’s exotic, to go to the same place for like, 5 days, but I know that in the long run that would never work for me. Typically, there is no typical day in the life of Jake Bailey. Sometimes my call time is 4am, sometimes 4pm, there are any number of personalities I might be working with, from 13 years old to 63 years old.

Q: What do you love about your job?
A: I like the constant change, I like that I’m constantly exposed to new forms of stimulation and different personalities. Getting to work with people like Katy, who’s so adventurous. With her I never even know what I’m going to do, I don’t even know what the make-up is going to be because she has so many ideas and she’s so game for all kinds of play, like for this campaign, I have no idea what we’re going to do but I have to bring everything but the kitchen sink ‘cause you never know! But that’s what I like, I like not really know what’s coming. I always get to work with a lot of really incredible people, collaborating with David LaChapelle and Denilo and Johnny Wujek, you get to work with the best people and it’s so inspiring. That just keeps you inspired and keeps you going, playing off each other and getting new ideas. It’s a great job and the travel is amazing, but if I have vacation time I tend to just stay home because that’s the exotic location as opposed to aeroplanes and hotels for work!

Q: What trends are you loving at the moment?
A: Lipstick is back! I feel like for a long time it was all gloss, all the time and gloss is pretty, but lipstick is so classic. There’s something really finished and refined about it and also the companies are making much better textures, they’re not nearly as waxy and heavy as they used to be so you get more lip texture which is sexier. I definitely like the movement towards lipsticks as opposed to lip glosses, maybe I’ll use a little bit of gloss on top but I really like that finished look that lipstick gives. Skin as well, companies are making much better formulas of foundation. They’re getting really refined so you can get a really flawless look without looking like you’re wearing a lot of makeup, it’s much prettier.

Q: What’s the one make-up product that all girls should have?
A: Probably mascara, but you should wear more than one product. I’d say foundation, blush and mascara, that’s what you need. That’s the bare bones, but mascara would be the most important because your eyes are, I think, the most important feature on your face and mascara is going to define them and make your lashes look pretty, and you’re probably going to get the most impact out of that one product. You should curl your lashes before you use it. My other tip would be that you should use liquid foundations instead of powder foundations. Liquid looks a lot nicer, creams tend to travel a lot and powders tend to get blotchy and it builds throughout the day. Use a liquid foundation and then a really translucent or clear powder to touch it up throughout the day, that’s the way to go.

Q: Whose make-up would you most like to do, dead or alive?
A: Marilyn Monroe, because I have been a fan since I was 6 years old when my dad showed me 'Some Like It Hot'. She’s just a fascinating character, she’s legendary. I’ve read all of her biographies and she’s someone I love to have met. She’s one of the great beauties of this past century, she’s about as iconic as you get. I think we’d really get along!
