paisley |ˈpāzlē|

textile pattern characterized by colourful, curved abstract figures

ORIGIN 1825–35; named after a town of southwest Scotland west of Glasgow. It has been a textile centre since the early 18th century and became famous in the 19th century for its colourful patterned shawls. Population: 73,000.

WHAT YOU'LL NEED...

1 pair of canvas shoes ($20 from No. 1 Shoe Warehouse, or The Warehouse)
White or Coloured Pencil ($1 from Whitcoulls or The Warehouse)
Fabric Paint or Dimension puff paint. Get the little squirty bottles which are easier to control (around $4 each from an emporium or Spotlight)

STEP ONE... sketching out

Start with clean and dry shoes; take out any shoe accessories i.e. laces, etc.

Sketch out your design on the shoes. Keep it random and play with different sizes of shapes. I did a paisley design and used some other random patterns to fill in the gaps. Swirls and hearts etc...

STEP TWO... paint it

Test out the paint on some scrap fabric first. We need to get the right consistency before we put it on your shoes! Depending on the effect you desire, really thick for a puffy design... or paint it on thin and it will have a more drawn on effect.

Once you have drawn out your design, go over the draft in fabric paint. Be careful to not smudge the paint!

STEP THREE... these shoes are made for...

Once we have painted both shoes all over, leave the shoes to dry in a dry place where they will not get knocked.

It’s best to leave the shoes for at least 24 hours to dry. Be sure to check they are completely dry, before you hit the pavement with 'em.

VARIATIONS...

Use different colours of fabric paint

Try using multiple colours within the designs

Create different designs, polka dots, hearts, spades and clubs, lightning bolts etc.
