"The clothes were definitely more exciting in past decades, but I would rather be a woman now than anytime in history."

Fashion designer RACHEL ANTONOFF [and sister of Fun. guitarist, Jack Antonoff] has a pretty incredible life! Coup De Main had the privilege of discussing very 'important' things with the woman herself... like 'Teen Witch', Zooey Deschanel, and [not] revealing the real 'A'.

COUP DE MAIN: Where did the initial inspiration and motivation come from to create your own label?
RACHEL: Before I started 'Rachel Antonoff', I had a line with a partner and when we went our separate ways, I just knew it was something I wanted to do and jumped right into it.

CDM: What has been the greatest highlight for you, in the lifespan of 'Rachel Antonoff' the label, so far?
RACHEL: It's not so much a specific moment, but anytime someone has a special experience in something I made and tells me about it. That is the best part of doing this.

CDM: Was it an easy decision to name the brand after yourself?
RACHEL: It's actually the last name I thought of! At first I wanted the company to have its own name but nothing I thought of felt right. Going under my own name didn't occur to me for a while and now I'm so glad that's what I settled on.

CDML How similar or different is your creative process when designing for your own label, to designing for 'Bass Loves Rachel Antonoff' shoes?
RACHEL: It's pretty similar in terms of approach and then of course different in terms of production. For the shoes and the clothes I have my best ideas while just daydreaming.

CDM: Zooey Deschanel wore one of your dresses for her opening monologue on 'Saturday Night Live' which must've been pretty exciting for you! On your dream wish-list, where - or on who - is left, that you'd like to see your clothes being worn?
RACHEL: That was super exciting. I have been really proud of all the girls we have been lucky enough to dress. I would love to dress Clemence Poesy and Troian Bellisario.

CDM: What was it like working with Tennessee Thomas on the lemonade stand lookbook for your Spring 2011 'Bass Shoes' collection last year?
RACHEL: Wonderful! She is the best. That was definitely one of the most fun shoots I've ever been on. But working with Tennessee would be a blast even in the absence of kittens and milkshakes : )

CDM: If you were to write your own theme-song à la 'Top That' from 'Teen Witch', what would be the main lyrics of the chorus?
RACHEL: Honestly I think I would be a terrible lyricist, I'll spare us all!

CDM: I've heard your cover of Steel Train's song 'Fall Asleep', have you ever considered recording more music?
RACHEL: My brother and I have recorded a few things together, it's really fun! It would be fun to do more but I think we are both too busy these days.

CDM: If you could live in any time period [and dress accordingly], which year would you choose and why?
RACHEL: You know, probably this one. The clothes were definitely more exciting in past decades, but I would rather be a woman now than anytime in history.

CDM: Is it safe to assume that you are quite fond of cats, having designed a [super cute] cat-pocket dress, and having had Marshmallow and Mr. Wendy under your employment in the past?
RACHEL: I am very fond of cats, kittens in particular, but sadly I don't have any. I definitely think about getting one though!

CDM: Important question: Who do you think is [the real] 'A' on 'Pretty Little Liars'?
RACHEL: I have absolutely no idea, which is part of why I think the show is genius. Very excited for next season!

CDM: What is your favourite Fun. song and why?
RACHEL: I really love them all!

CDM: What is the best piece of advice you've ever been given?
RACHEL: "Relax and enjoy the sandwiches" - Nate Harold.

CDM: Since this is our 'We Hearts' issue, are you able to share with us five things that you 'heart' right now?
RACHEL: Yes! let's see... right now, I heart:
1. Printed lace.
2. 'Momofuku' milk bar.
3. 'Revel & Riot'.
4. Comfy sweatshirts.
5. 'Mia Pharaoh' by Miniature Tigers.
