KELSEY GENNA is a seed of inspiration to the fashion world! Genna is a true wunderkind, having her own label at nineteen years old, which is named after her lovely self. Her label looks exactly as it sounds; feminine, beautiful, soft and perfectly special.
After falling head over heels after her delicate pieces, Kelsey cited a few of our favourites in her style inspiration list; Clemence Poesy, Alexa Chung and Zooey Deschanel! We knew it was love at first sight.
Along with drive and a true passion for her hand-made craft, Kelsey Genna is surely on her way to success... we can only cross our fingers, shut our eyes tight, and wish to see more of her in the future!
Coup De Main caught up with Kelsey to discuss all things interesting...
COUP DE MAIN: Congratulations on recently graduating from your degree in Fashion Design. How did you get into it all? KELSEY GENNA: Thank you! It has just been something I have always wanted to do. I don’t necessarily feel I have too much talent, more so drive and love for what I do. Since I was a young one I have always been very creative. I spent my entire childhood creating collage magazines, Barbie runway shows and amateur fashion videos with my friends. I picked up sewing when I was fourteen and have slowly gotten into everything since.
CDM: Your hand-made pieces are emphasised as being quite a selling point to your limited pieces. Is this part of 'Kelsey Genna' beginnings or do you plan to keep hand-making your designs? KELSEY GENNA: Certainly to begin with the choice to go handmade was based around it being the most realistic way to start out... but for me personally it has become a special characteristic of the label, and something I would love to keep a part of Kelsey Genna. Naturally some time soon I will not have the time to create everything myself... but I hope to always have every part of the process done in-house. It just keeps things personal and special.
CDM: Where or whom do you draw your inspirations from?
KELSEY GENNA: I find inspiration in many places. Photography / Film / Art / Nature. I am very interested and influenced by fashion history particularly trends from the 50's / 60's... For my final project at university I worked around flowers, one of my great loves. I studied some of my favourite flowers and translated the colours, shapes and textures into each dress. Young people also inspire me, sometimes I think I am young doing what I’m doing... then I discover fourteen year old wunderkinds taking the most amazing photos etc. All the talent in this world it just overwhelms me.
CDM: What does your day to day life consist of?
KELSEY GENNA: I usually spend my mornings checking e-mails, posting mail and just generally organising things… then in the afternoons once I’m feeling more creative I work on orders or samples for new collections.
CDM: Who would be at the top of your 'best dressed' list? KELSEY GENNA: I like all the Lula girls... Alexa Chung // Clemence Poesy // Kirsten Dunst // Zooey Deschanel // Elle Fanning. They all very much reflect my kind of style. CDM: What are three things you can't live without? KELSEY GENNA: Creativity // Friendship // Internet.
KELSEY GENNA: Doing what I’m doing! So I am a lucky girl.
CDM: What does this year hold for you... or what would you like it to? KELSEY GENNA: I really do not know. This year has already turned out so much greater than I could have expected. There are so many projects on my mind for the near and distant future. I would really love to do a pop-up store sometime this year... just for my own personal enjoyment. But we will just have to wait and see.
HEART WATCHING = Audrey Hepburn movies. HEART READING = I’m not too into reading; I just like looking at the pictures. HEART IN GENERAL = Travel. I very much have the travel bug right now.
