CATERINA GATTA is a twenty-seven-year-old fashion designer based in Milan, who boasts experience in the industry far beyond her years. It's rare to see a true passion blossoming naturally into a label, all whilst staying true to the uniqueness of herself as the brand. Caterina is one of the only designers I know who uses only vintage fabrics - abandoned harlequin textiles from designers as such as Gianni Versace, Yves Saint Laurent, Fausto Sarli, Pierre Cardin, Lancetti, Irene Galitzine, Givenchy, Valentino and many more! Caterina Gatta has been named as 'one to watch' in the coming years, which is exactly what we intend on doing... COUP DE MAIN: How did 'Caterina Gatta' the label form? Who inspired/influenced you to begin a clothing label? CATERINA GATTA: Everything started in 2008. At that time I was working as an assistant to a fashion journalist during Milan Fashion Week. I decided to create a couple of dresses for myself for the shows using an amazing fabric from Princess Irene Galitzine. Everybody was attracted by the pattern of the fabric, then the rest came naturally.
CDM: Your prints are so vibrant and lively, how do you choose them? CATERINA GATTA: I'm happy that people really noticed that they are vibrant and lively in their uniqueness. It's a personal and instinctive approach to them, each fabric has a different feeling on my mood. CDM: As well as being vibrant and lively, I've read that you only choose Vintage fabric. Why is that? CATERINA GATTA: I've always loved doing things different from anybody else... the research of the fabrics is an important aspect of my brand and I love the fact that the material is from a couple of decades ago, but the looks are all 'now'. CDM: Tell me a little bit about your creative process when designing a range... CATERINA GATTA: The fabric always comes first, then I decide the shape/proportions. The silhouette is dictated by the textile.
CDM: Who/what is the inspiration behind your Fall '11 collection? CATERINA GATTA: Each fabric has a different story and background, so there in the collection there is more then one theme. I start from the romanticist of the fabrics signed by Lancetti, Valentino, Fausto Sarli or Christian Dior, and ended with a touch of pop/rock with the fabrics signed by Gianni Versace and Givenchy. The inspiration comes from all my interests that are mixed together and make up my fantasy. CDM: Name a few things that you couldn't live without? CATERINA GATTA: Everything that makes me feel alive: family, friends and art, people, photos, music, and movies that inspire me.
HEART LISTENING: The Black Keys, Jeff Buckley, The Kills, Wild Beasts, The National. HEART WATCHING: Everything by Woody Allen. HEART READING: I love reading biographies.
