Everyone knows that the backbone to a well-filled wardrobe is quality basics, and born and bred Mt. Maunganui label 'FIVE EACH' produce exactly that. It's not everyday that one gets over-enthused about a plain-white-tee, but trust me with this brand you will be. With their subtle detailing within each piece, I have great respect for a brand that sticks to quality over quantity and doesn't go too off tangent trying to design the most up-to-date on-trend everything! With an explanation to the name of the label, as well as a brief lesson on the beginnings of the brand, Coup De Main caught up with designer TAMRYN REEVE to get some insight into the lovely label... COUP DE MAIN: What was the initial inspiration to create 'Five Each'? FIVE EACH: We just wanted to create quality, yet basic and reasonably priced t-shirting styles for when you just want to throw on a nice tee without all the branding and heavy screen printing, yet with a slight point of difference.
CDM: How did you come up with the name 'Five Each'? FIVE EACH: We figured that five pieces for men and five for women would be a nice tight range size each season. We started with two seasons a year and now we're releasing four seasons; Summer, Autumn, Winter and Spring. CDM: Can you tell us a little bit about your up and coming Spring/Summer '11 collection? FIVE EACH: The Spring range that is in store now is nautically inspired with a mid navy, cream, grey marl and navy stripe. For Summer we've put together mustard, black, a smokey blue and a white stripe. There's plenty of colour blocking, some cute dresses and even some shorts in the mix! CDM: I love the last range for being so simple and basic, yet on trend - what is the creative process when designing the range? FIVE EACH: I try and think of every body shape while designing the range, as well as covering all of the bases to include short sleeve, no sleeve, long sleeve, loose, fitted, long, short... CDM: What did you want to be when you were eight years old? FIVE EACH: At eight I wanted to be a mechanic. I think mainly inspired by Kylie Minogue's character on 'Neighbours' ... but once I pushed through that phase I dreamt of being a 'fashion designer' and spent any spare time drawing ludicrous designs and hand-stitching things together until I was allowed to use Mum's sewing machine.
CDM: Time machines are yet to exist... What would be the first thing to come to mind if they were real? FIVE EACH: Randomly the first thing that comes to mind is going back to the late 80's to meet and work with Belgian designer Martin Margiela. He's kept a very low profile so I've got no idea what he looks like, but I have so much respect for his work and would have loved to work with him back then. CDM: What is your must-have for this Spring? FIVE EACH: A nice bright pair of shoes! I've just bought some bright orange Jeffery Campbell flat wedges online that I'm eagerly awaiting delivery. CDM: What are three things you can't live without? FIVE EACH: The fresh sea air, Monday night dinners with my family, and hearing the infectious giggle of my three-year-old nephew. CDM: What are you looking forward to the most about Summer? FIVE EACH: Long warm evenings and fun with friends. Everyone seems to be in hibernation at the moment, but Summer is such a a fun social time in Mount Maunganui. CDM: What's the best advice you've ever been given? FIVE EACH: I'm really bad at recalling these sorts of things, but one I think is quite cute: "It's nice to be important, but it's more important to be nice."
CDM: Quick Fire Five: 1.If you were an animal what animal would you be? A black panther. 2. What is your favourite type of lolly? Snifters. 3. If your house was on fire and you only had time to grab one thing, what would it be? My laptop. 4. What is your favourite thing you own? Recently it's a leather sleeved, denim Ksubi jacket. 5. Late nights = Good times.
CDM: Can you please put together a playlist of your top five songs? FIVE EACH: The Beatles - 'In My Life'. Dan Leigh - 'No One At All'. De La Soul - 'All Good'. Ben Harper - 'She's Only Happy In The Sun'. Elton John - 'Tiny Dancer'.
