Off the back of her last EP 'The Wait', singer-songwriter CHARLOTTE SOMETIMES turned the heads/chairs of all the judges on Season 2 of 'The Voice' during her blind audition round, opting for Blake Shelton to be her coach.
Sometimes - whose real-name is Jessica Charlotte Poland - first came to my attention back in 2008 with her debut single 'How I Could Just Kill A Man' and the 'Waves And The Both Of Us' album, so it's great to see her finally receiving recognition in New Zealand...
COUP DE MAIN: For those that haven't heard your music before, how would you describe it?
CHARLOTTE SOMETIMES: Alternative pop rock... I guess? I'm the meathead's artsy chick.
CDM: Who or what, are your main songwriting influences and inspirations?
CHARLOTTE: Fiona Apple, Death Cab For Cutie, John Hiatt, Roy Orbison, and Tegan and Sara. I think all of them are true artists and use their voices in really unique, expensive ways.
CDM: Lyrically, what's your favourite song that you've ever written and why?
CHARLOTTE: I think my favourite song I've ever written is my new song, 'Paint The Sky'. It's so simple but has a strong message and I think that's important in a song.

CDM: What do you feel are the main points of difference between your debut album 'Waves And The Both Of Us' and the new songs you've been writing for your 'Circus Head' EP?
CHARLOTTE: I think there has been a deep growth in my ability to write songs and also the subject matter. I am no longer an angsty teenager... but hey there is still a little 'grrr arggh' in me.
CDM: Do you have a favourite song on your 'Circus Head' EP?
CHARLOTTE: 'Paint The Sky'.
CDM: Which of the new songs are you most looking forward to playing live?
CHARLOTTE: I think I am looking forward to playing 'Second Best' because it's so much fun to dance to.
CDM: Are you stoked with how supportive your fans have been of your PledgeMusic campaign to release the 'Circus Head' EP?
CHARLOTTE: YES! It's so bloody cool! I love that I have the best fans in the world!

CDM: What are the most important things you learnt from your experience of competing on 'The Voice'?
CHARLOTTE: Don't stop believing in yourself.
CDM: What was Blake Shelton like as a coach?
CHARLOTTE: He was rad and the man can throw down his booze!
CDM: If C.H.A.R.L.O.T.T.E. S.O.M.E.T.I.M.E.S. was a real-life acronym, what would each letter stand for?
CHARLOTTE: Oh gosh... Can I pass on this? I'm not that smart.
CDM: Which period in time would you want to travel back to, if you time-travelled like the namesake for your stage-name, 'Charlotte Sometimes' [the book]?
CHARLOTTE: Great question! I think I would like to go back to the 1920s. My great-grandmother was a flapper... so it's still in my blood. I think it was a great time for music and fun!
CDM: What are your five favourite things in the whole wide world and why?
CHARLOTTE: My cat!! She is the most adorable fat-ass ever... and she co-writes a lot of my material. My family, because they are as weird as I am. Chardonnay... I like to drink. 'BUFFY THE VAMPIRE SLAYER'... is my constant happiness. My guitar... got to write music!

CDM: If you could be any Disney princess, which one would you want to be and why?
CHARLOTTE: Jasmine!! Because I look like her the most and she has awesome clothes... and A TIGER!!
CDM: What's next for Charlotte Sometimes?
CHARLOTTE: You tell me...
CDM: Can we hope that you'll visit us in New Zealand one day?
CHARLOTTE: I would love to come! Let's make it happen!!
