With their debut EP 'Wake The Earth' - which was released back in 2009 - whimsical duo THE HONEY TREES welcomed listeners into their world of musical narratives and dreamy soundscapes, that the pair say they "try to make magic" from.
Band-members BECKY FILIP and JACOB WICK are currently working on getting into a studio to record their very first full-length album... and I for one, am highly impatient for a follow-up to their three-year-old EP!
COUP DE MAIN: Who or what, are your main songwriting influences and inspirations?
THE HONEY TREES - BECKY FILIP & JACOB WICK: We both are influenced by a lot of the same things... mainly just life, and love, and seeing what those around us are going through. We can be inspired by anything from music itself, to a conversation with someone.
CDM: For those that haven't heard your music before, how would you describe it?
THE HONEY TREES: Currently, the music we write is very melodic, and maybe a little bit dreamy and whimsical.
CDM: What do you hope for people to take away from listening to your music?
THE HONEY TREES: We hope that people find hope in the music we create. The idea of it being more than just music is what we strive for. We've gotten quite a few e-mails from people saying our music has helped them in dark times, and that is very special to us.
CDM: Lyrically, what's your favourite song that you've written so far?
THE HONEY TREES: Both of us have been writing songs for the next record and so far there are two songs that we feel very close to. One is called 'Ammon's Horn' the other is called 'Wild Winds'. The songs were inspired by the idea of losing someone who is very close. Both songs deal with similar situations but in two very different lights.
CDM: What's your songwriting process like?
THE HONEY TREES: The writing process is a little different between the two of us, but we usually start out writing on our own and then we come together at some point and complete the song if needed. Sometimes, both of us will have ideas that we'll hand off to each other, and that has been a good source of inspiration.
CDM: What is your favourite song to play live?
THE HONEY TREES: 'Orchard' has always been one that we've loved playing.
CDM: When can fans expect a full-length album?
THE HONEY TREES: We're working on that at the moment. We've been writing songs for the past two years, and the next step is to just get into the studio. It's taken a little while because we've been really thinking about what direction we want to go in and how to approach a full-length album. But hopefully sometime next year!
CDM: How do you feel your new songs / un-recorded songs that you've been writing for the album, compare to the songs on your 'Wake The Earth' EP?
THE HONEY TREES: The process of writing 'Wake The Earth' is very different from writing for this new album. 'Wake The Earth' was written and recorded in a span of a few months, before we were really established as a band. So with these new songs, we feel like we have more direction, and more time to fine-tune what we're working on. Also, we've been sharing the songwriting and singing roles, so that will be different from the EP.
CDM: Becky and Jacob, how did you first meet?
THE HONEY TREES: We met at a show in Sacramento in 2005, through mutual friends.
CDM: What are your five favourite things in the whole wide world?
THE HONEY TREES: Love, family, art, adventure, and good food.
CDM: Tell me something no-one else knows about each member of the band...
THE HONEY TREES: Becky has dual citizenship between the US and the UK, and Jacob collects motorbikes.
CDM: If you could grant yourself magical powers, what would you choose to have?
THE HONEY TREES: In this current moment, Jacob would like to be able to imagine things into existence, and Becky would like to teleport.
CDM: I love your cover of 'Moon River'! Are you fans of 'Breakfast At Tiffany's' / Audrey Hepburn?
THE HONEY TREES: Of course! Although, 'Breakfast At Tiffany's' isn't our favourite Audrey Hepburn movie, but we do love, love her. Becky's favourite is 'Funny Face', and Jacob's favourite is 'My Fair Lady'.
CDM: If T.H.E. H.O.N.E.Y. T.R.E.E.S. was a real-life acronym, what would each letter stand for?
THE HONEY TREES: This is such a difficult question! In all honesty we can't think of anything good enough!
CDM: What's next for The Honey Trees?
THE HONEY TREES: Recording and hopefully lots of touring.
CDM: Can we hope that you'll visit us in New Zealand one day?
THE HONEY TREES: We would definitely love to. It's one of the main places we've been wanting to visit! All we know about New Zealand are 'Flight Of The Conchords', bungy-jumping, it's Winter there right now, and it's beautiful. Let's hope we go there soon!
