PART VIII l PART IX

Tarantino, Art Is The Weapon, and Dr. Death Defying...

GERARD WAY:
And I think I realized: wow, I'm in a band with my best friends in the world and they're all super fucking smart and they're all super artistic. Let's use that. Let's make this record about the art. Like, let's make art a weapon and like, we really do that, you know? So that's something I want to say about the album.

FRANK IERO: I totally agree.

MIKEY WAY: Yeah. We all have like hidden talents. Like Frank, he's an amazing photographer.

GERARD: Yeah, 'cause all these weird talents hop out, that you... we get so pigeonholed into like being a band that you stop realizing, wait a minute, we have other interests and we're good at other things, so let's do those things. And everybody did them.

FRANK: A lot of fun. No regret.

GERARD: We, when we did 'Na Na Na' and we start talking about 2019, we felt like the record, even though it wasn't like a tight concept and it doesn't have a story or anything, but it felt like, if the record felt like these kind of transmissions from 2019 - so I thought it would be amazing, to do this thing where you have a DJ. And I, I made this DJ up named Dr. Death Defying because I felt that the phrase "death defying" actually kind of sums the band, and that's what immortality and rock and roll is all about. So, it's actually obviously inspired by the soundtrack to 'Reservoir Dogs' by, there's a lot of Tarantino in this, which I love. And so I kept thinking: what is the iconic phrase that's gonna start this out? Like, what's kind of a new thing even if people have said it before, but what's the one thing, I... and I was in the art studio, we have this big chalk wall, and I wrote it on there so I wouldn't forget it: Look Alive, Sunshine. And I was like, yeah, that's what he would say, you know? And then, he really, if you're on a roller-coaster and it's going up that big first peak, he's holding your hand. And then when you get to the top is really when 'Na Na Na' kicks off. And then he just lets go of your hand and then you're on this ride throughout the entire record. And he checks in on you and he says goodbye, but really he hand holds you only for, it seems like 30 seconds or a minute in it.
