PART XVII l PART XVIII

"I was trying to leave a message in a bottle for my daughter"...

FRANK IERO:
That song, when did that come about? Was that early on the first? Was that late? That one came later...

GERARD WAY: Later.

RAY TORO: Yeah.

FRANK:
It was like...

MIKEY WAY: Later one, yeah.

FRANK: ...in between songs... which, that sentiment almost was the title of the record at one point.

GERARD: Yeah, it was. Yeah.

FRANK: And...

GERARD: It was the only thing that I could latch onto as a lyricist...

FRANK: Yeah.

GERARD: ...and say, well, at least this much is what I'm trying to say. As I, as the record [became] apparent, it became apparent to me that at the very least, I was trying to leave a message in a bottle for my daughter. Instead of making a record about being a new dad, it was more about like - I want this record to be for her at 15 or whatever. And that's [where] the notion of 'Save Yourself, I'll Hold Them Back' kind of came from 'cause it's kind [of like]... it's a song where I didn't... I want her to look back. If anything ever would happen to her dad and their uncles, just like these guys said, we're actually kind of not necessarily always cupcakes. And in defense of the audience, for sure that song exists, you know?
