cobra starship & leighton meester - good girls go bad

COBRA STARSHIP
are an under-appreciated Fueled By Ramen / Decaydance Records signed band, created by former Midtown vocalist/bassist Gabe Saporta. Their styling is based somewhere between the pop-punk of fellow Fueled By Ramen artists, mixed with electro-synths which could have been taken straight from an 80’s disco. They’re bright. They’re bubbly, and in their own words, “[they’re] just here to make you dance... [they] don’t care if they’re a guilty pleasure".
leighton meester on Gossip Girl as Blair Waldorf LEIGHTON MEESTER
is an actress better known for her role as the high society princess and ever-fashionable Blair Waldorf on the hit series 'Gossip Girl'. Like seemingly most actors and actresses these days...
Leighton also dabbles in the field of music.

Her trip through the musical jungle, led to a signing with Universal Republic Records and a guest appearance on Cobra Starship’s new single ‘Good Girls Go Bad’, off of their soon-to-be-released new album ‘Hot Mess'.

Usually when an actor or actress decides to unleash their musical “talent” onto the world... It doesn’t end well...

Remember Scarlett Johansson’s album?

Or how about Russell Crowe’s band??

No?
Me neither.
There are some roles in life that certain people are not meant to play... and just because one is a good actor/actress does not guarantee this talent will transfer from screen, to sound-wave.

Having been scarred from these past actor-turned-musician disasters, I was a little sceptical when I heard that Blair Waldorf -- sorry Leighton Meester -- was not only collaborating with Cobra Starship, but also signed to release an album...
With hesitance, I clicked on the Youtube video which Saporta uploaded onto his account – the internet debut of ‘Good Girls Go Bad’. The single, which had been premiered on Ryan Seacrest’s morning show in the U.S. was met with positive reviews, with Seacrest himself dubbing it as the ‘anthem of the summer’. So I clicked. Listened. Loved.

Cobra Starship have kept their dance-floor-friendly beats heavy on the synth, and Leighton’s voice is strong, radio friendly and fits perfectly as a summer anthem. Diving further into the land of Youtube, a cover of 'Bette Davis Eyes' solidifies the fact that Meester can sing, and she can sing well.

With Starship’s new album 'Hot Mess' set to drop in the U.S. on August 11th... and a release date on Leighton’s debut currently unknown, there are a good few months of anticipation to be had before the verdict of my internal debate of “can an actress really pull off being a credible and good musician?”... is known. All signs are pointing to yes.

Chinese zodiac may claim it’s the year of the ox, but I’m betting this might just be the year of the Cobra, with Miss Meester coming in as the new pop-princess.

Move over B, there's a new queen in town.

You know you love me,
xoxo
