Disney keep their protégées busy. Sixteen year old DEMI LOVATO has beamed and twinkled her way from 'Camp Rock'-dom, to starring as the lead in television show 'Sonny With A Chance' and upcoming movie, 'Princess Protection Programme', with BFFL Selena Gomez of 'Wizards Of Waverly Place'. Lovato's Jonas Brothers friendships also led to an opening slot on their 2008 sold-out 'Burnin' Up' American tour, plus a duet on Lovato's debut album, 'On The Line'. Stay tuned for Lovato's second album, 'Here We Go Again', released State-side in July...

“I want people to know me, and that I write about them. I’m human; you’re human, so let’s relate.”

Entertainment industry beginnings!
DEMI LOVATO: I attended a casting call when I was five for 'Barney & Friends', but was turned down because I didn't know how to read. I tried again when I was six and by then, I had learned to read. This time I made the cut and ended up spending two seasons on the show. That’s where I also met my best friend, Selena Gomez.

Life after Barney?
DEMI: I guest-starred in several series (including a 2006 episode of 'Prison Break').  But my big break happened when I did a screen test for Disney. This led to me getting a role on 'As the Bell Rings', (a recurring series of shorts that runs between programs on the network). Even though the show was only, like, five minutes, it was the Disney Channel! I thought it was the coolest thing. When I got the part, I actually cried. I thought, I'm not going to be able to do this — I'm not funny! I'm never going to be able to work for the Disney Channel, because they're based on comedy.

Kids can be so cruel...
DEMI: I asked to leave public school. I was kind of bullied. I had a hate wall in the bathroom, and everyone signed a petition that said, 'We all hate Demi Lovato”.

'Camp Rock'. 'Camp Rock'. 'Camp Rock'. Oh... and the Jonas Brothers.
DEMI: Imagine being new to Disney and your first big job, is being the romantic interest of one of the biggest heartthrobs on the channel. Any girl that is a friend of the Jonas Brothers gets hate mail and is automatically suspected as a girlfriend

Demi + Joe Jonas? True? False?
DEMI: Joe and I never dated. We're really good friends. I just think it's funny that people try to pin me to them. It's like, "Oh, come on! I think [if I were going to] I would have dated one of them by now!''

Inspiration for your debut album, 'Don't Forget'?

DEMI: Kelly Clarkson, when she first went rock, was totally my inspiration. I decided to try it and it was like... Wow, this fits more. I realize, though, that I am a pop singer. I'm not gonna try to be too 'Oh, I'm hardcore, I'm a rock girl.' No, I'm with the Disney Channel! But bubblegum isn't really my thing.

Role-model?
DEMI: Hilary Duff. I mean, I'm sure she made mistakes, but you never saw them. I think it's really cool that someone can grow up and continue to be looked up to by young girls.

Future plans for the next five years?

DEMI: I can talk about my 20-year plan! *laughs* I'm not even thinking about five years. But hopefully I'll still be touring and doing my TV show; obviously I'll continue that. I want to start doing movies, like feature films. And I would love to maybe direct one day.

Demi Lovato's debut album 'Don't Forget', featuring the singles 'Get Back', 'La La Land' and 'Don't Forget', is in-stores now!
