They say that the third time is a charm... I’m not sure who ‘they’ are, but for LANEWAY FESTIVAL - at least in terms of 2012's line-up - this statement certainly rang true, with the festival’s third visit to our shores pulling some of the best artists the indie/alt scene currently has to offer. Filled with an eccentric mix of indie-folk, 80’s influenced ‘chillwave’ and superstar songstresses, Auckland’s Silo Park transformed from its usual concrete jungle of car-parks, to a concrete jungle of feathers-in-hair and beer-in-hand music appreciators.
With twenty-two acts scheduled across three stages, the day kicked off with local act OPOSSOM - the new project of The Mint Chicks' Kody Nielson. Bringing his girlfriend and well-respected musician Bic Runga along for the ride, New Zealand’s own musical powerhouse couple, alongside a guitarist, entertained the eager crowd who had shown up as the gates opened with their unique brand of laid-back indie rock. With their debut album due out in a few months, this will undoubtedly only be the beginning of Opossom’s ascent. |

It's been a busy year for pop-punk legend turned entrepreneur TOM DELONGE. Between the release of Blink-182's album 'Neighborhoods', touring the U.S., and ANGELS & AIRWAVES' seemingly endless array of endeavours - 'Love' the film, 'Love: Part Two' the album, and 'Strange Times' the website, just to name a few - it's hard to comprehend just how busy DeLonge's 2011 was.
With an Australian tour coming up in February and March of 2012 as part of SOUNDWAVE FESTIVAL, it was a great honour and privilege to get Tom DeLonge all to ourselves for fifteen precious minutes to talk all things Angels & Airwaves, a dash of Blink-182... and of course, if he will ever return to New Zealand. |

CULTS have just released a teaser for their upcoming 'You Know What I Mean' music video!
In an interview late last year with the band's BRIAN OBLIVION, he said about the video:
"I'm really excited about it, we just watched the final cut yesterday. It should be out sometime this or next month - probably next month or the end of this month to be honest. It's centred around... it's a story about a stuntman and Madeline plays the stunt-coach's daughter and everything starts out really nice and then ends up getting really convoluted. It's like a little movie, it's not even really like a music video but I got to do some really cool stunts in it which was really fun - I got to jump off really high stuff into air bags and stuff like that!"

Walking into the Mt. Smart Stadium grounds for 2012’s BIG DAY OUT, the usual feelings of excitement and anticipation that one feels when walking through the festival's gates, was this year joined by sadness. After all, it was only a few days earlier that organizer Ken West had announced that this year’s event would now be the last time that the Big Day Out would make the trip across the Tasman, and with this year’s festival already having been considerably downsized to cut costs, upon arrival it wasn’t surprising to see why Mr. West made the decision that will undoubtedly leave a hole in many music fans’ Summer schedule.
You know that usual D barricade? Gone. That typical fight up to the front of the crowd to see your favourite band was a distant memory, with perhaps the exception of Soundgarden who closed the Main Stage with a rather impressively sized crowd. One lone stage replaced the old Blue and Orange Stages at the top of the field with a skate ramp set up next door, which although a great novelty, didn’t seem to really draw too much interest all day aside from the 45-minutes that skate legend TONY HAWK made an appearance. Down further from the ramp was the very small Skate Stage which was home to many of the days’ local acts such as Midnight Youth and I Am Giant who were scattered between a few internationals. |

A DAY TO REMEMBER ARE COMING TO NEW ZEALAND TO PLAY A ONE-OFF SHOW!
Yes, all your requests and efforts have finally paid off and Coup De Main is pleased to announce that the kings of the post-hardcore/pop-mosh scene are headed to our shores for one show only in Auckland on February 23rd (and yes, it's all ages and licensed!). The Florida natives have come a long way since their last shows on our shores in December 2008. They've headlined sold-out tours aroud the world, peaked at Number 11 on the U.S. album charts with their 2010 release 'What Seperates Me From You', and after skipping out on New Zealand on their most recent Australian tours, it's finally our turn to experience the band well-known for bringing a lot of energy, enthusiasm and of course, the mosh, on our own soil. |
