Ah, the BIG DAY OUT. A staple of Summer, a tradition born out of the need for live music and good friends, a day (and night) of strange encounters, musical madness and thousands of bodies united as one, lost in the magic of whatever artists take their fancy.

The Big Day Out 2011 was successful in all of these things, with a few additions. First of all, rain?! How those Brits manage entire festivals in mud and torrential rain without complaining is amazing beyond belief. After thirty minutes of a constant shower of water,  I - as well as many people I encountered - were over it. Something about Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros screams "sun" to me... not "witness through a curtain of rain drops..." And it wasn’t even the fact I was wet which annoyed me the most - embrace it, was my motto of the day - it was the subsequent cold that was hard to deal with, and I was prepared even! How the girls in the tiny[!] denim shorts and cropped t-shirts coped, I have no idea.

Weather aside, this year's Big Day Out was contested by many (myself included) as having a bad line-up. Maybe it was the lack of acts played on mainstream radio or maybe it was the fact that if you didn’t like metal, you didn’t really need to hang out at the main stages from 7PM onwards. What I've learned over the years however is, no matter how many bands you like or dislike on the line-up, shared between the seven stages is an array of talent that without the Big Day Out I would have never probably experienced otherwise.

Here at Coup De Main, we kicked off our day by interviewing the King of Partying and inherent positivity - Andrew WK. Shooting confetti from party poppers at him while a Polaroid photo was being taken is something I never thought I’d get to do, and am so happy I did. You'll be able to read the interview soon.

Running from the spoken word and confetti party of Andrew WK to the Converse Essential Stage, we made it in time for the final few songs of THE GREENHORNES (an interview with them will also be up shortly). I had never listened to the rock band from Ohio before, but was pleasantly surprised by their garage-band style of rock which pulled a decent crowd for their early time-slot of 12:30PM.
