![]() I knew I was in for a treat when as I walked down Queen Street towards Aotea Square for 2011’s installment of ST. JEROME'S LANEWAY FESTIVAL, I began following a man with a possum tail hanging out the back of his jeans. I was in true h1p$t3r territory now, made even more amazing when I noticed the ‘artist’ lanyard swinging from possum-man's neck. Who was he? - I wondered. And what does he see in the giant New Zealand flag decorated fisherman’s hat adorning his head? Both of those questions sadly remain unanswered, although I have a sneaking suspicion that he may have been the drummer of Ariel Pink’s Haunted Graffiti, but this cannot be confirmed nor denied. With the festival in its second year, the organizers of Laneway certainly addressed all complaints from last year. The thirty minute wait for a punnet of chips last year was turned into a thirty second wait this year, and the new surroundings of Aotea Square made for a more fitting venue for a Summer festival than the car parks of Britomart. Oh yeah, and did I mention that the line-up this year featured some of the best bands the music scene currently has to offer? ![]() HOLY FUCK were the first band of the day for me, and wow - consider my mind to have been blown. Admittedly, I knew pretty much nothing of the Toronto-based electronic four-piece prior to Laneway, but after witnessing the raw and powerful wall of sound that soared from the speakers, I couldn’t help but take notice and head straight to their website upon getting home. Turns out, the band use live instrumentation only - no backing tracks, no laptop, no programming - all live, and I thought I was impressed before I knew this! Seriously, if you’re a fan of instrumental bands such as Ratatat you definitely need to check these guys out. ![]() PART II Click HERE for more live Holy Fuck photos. ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() ![]() |
