Los Angeles’ WARPAINT were up next - the only all-female band to grace the stage of Laneway this year. Admittedly, I had pretty high expectations for their performance and sadly, for me, they didn’t live up to it. Playing tracks such as ‘Warpaint’ and ‘Undertow’ it’s undeniable that the music they make is beautiful... however, its translation into the live setting left me feeling like it all fell flat.

The sharing of vocal duties between Emily Kokal (vocals/guitar), Theresa Wayman (vocals/guitar) and Jenny Lee Lindberg (vocals/bass), did provide some moments of magic - especially when all three girls sung in perfect harmony - however when contrasted with the other acts of the day, Warpaint were just missing that spark of life. That said, I’ve heard from many festival-goers that they really enjoyed the set, so maybe I’m just in the minority.
