Sum 41

I’ll be honest - I wasn’t really that excited to see SUM 41. For me, they lost their appeal sometime around 2005, and I had already seen them live for nostalgia’s sake in 2007... so, years later in 2011 I didn’t really know what they could offer me.

Turns out I was in the minority and proved wrong... Australians really do love their skate-rock and Sum 41 still know how to take their most skeptical fans back to the good old days.

Given that only days later, singer Deryck Whibley was admitted to hospital with severe pneumonia which subsequently forced Sum 41 to drop out of their sideshow performances and eventually Soundwave itself, I was glad I stuck around to watch their upbeat performance. There were no obvious signs of illness to Deryck’s performance - at times his vocals fell a little flat but considering the amount of running around and crowd interaction he and the rest of the band were giving off, any small errors are easily forgiven.

‘In Too Deep’, ‘Motivation’ and the set ending with ‘Fat Lip’ were definite crowd favourites - and being proved wrong in my skepticism never felt more awesome.
