Jimmy Eat World

Walking into Mango Music (R.I.P.) in Palmerston North in late 2001, I had a mission: purchase JIMMY EAT WORLD’s latest release ‘Bleed American’. That album was my first solid introduction to the band, and songs like ‘A Praise Chorus’ and ‘The Authority Song’ captivated me upon first listen and inspired me to dive into their back-catalogue and of course, wait for their next release.

Almost nine years on, on February 21st 2010, I found myself in front of the main stage at Soundwave Festival in Sydney, staring at the Jimmy Eat World banner hanging from the stage, eagerly anticipating the moment they would walk on stage. It’s an indescribable feeling, that anticipation of seeing a band you’ve loved for so many years perform live. Will they live up to the nine years of hype? Will they play the songs you love? Or will they be a total let down, and destroy your years of adoration?

Opening with ‘Sweetness’ followed by my personal favourite ‘A Praise Chorus’, I almost cried. It really was such a great performance; everything was just as I’d hoped. Their years of experience shone through in their tight performance; Jim Adkin’s vocals were complimented nicely by Tom Linton and Rick Burch, and drummer Zach Lind was solid.

One thing I love about Jimmy Eat World is their solid guitar riffs, which were equally as impressive live as they are on their albums. Slower songs such as ‘Hear You Me’ had the crowd singing in unison, and you better believe there was dancing for ‘Get It Faster’.

I imagine that the band's live performance will only be enhanced in a relatively intimate venue like The Powerstation and I can’t wait to relive one of the better concert experiences I’ve ever had. Witnessing one of the most influential bands of their genre live is a must-do for anyone who has been a fan of the band! You won’t regret it!!
