Global Dance Festival is a worldwide organization, which travels the globe showcasing some of the greatest DJ’s, and producers who have ever graced the House music industry. In 2009 this was evident with two monster shows in Auckland and Wellington. With such a respectable image in the festival world, I was sure to be in for a quality night with heavy weights, Klaas and Mobin Master taking the reigns for my evening journey through the magical world of House Music. Mobin Master, a solo artist based in Sydney is accountable for producing one of the biggest most monumental and respected house anthems ever, 'Show me love' skyrocketed Mobin Master into absolute super stardom making number one on Club charts around the world, he managed to keep this title for more than 52 weeks. Klaas hails from Germany and is predominantly an Electro house producer, he is a true pioneer of the German Electronic scene with his unique and distinctive sound resulting in him traveling the majority of the year playing at festivals all over the globe. With hits like 'Where’s your head at' and more top singles than I can keep count of, he is most defiantly one of the biggest and most-promising mainstream producers you will witness. Previous years Global has been held at the Ellerslie racecourse but this year a smaller venue was chosen, the Auckland Town hall. On arrival into the venue I was surprised to see how many people there were. With more mainstream marketing than usual, I knew I would experience possibly a younger and more inexperienced crowd, which happened to be very true. The venue consisted of one main room and two separate smaller rooms which hosted Hard house and Electro house either of which was full and to be blunt were rather boring. As I headed into the main room I was surprised to see the venue full of people dancing, lazing around or queuing for drinks, there were plenty of people deciding to dress up the atmosphere- along with the ever-so-estatic crowd. Mobin Master who played first, played a predominantly Dutch house set which set a perfect gradual build into Klaas who would later play harder electro house. Hits from Dutch houses biggest names Sydney Samson and Afrojack really got the crowd the moving but with the majority of his song selections being underground and unknown, he had trouble keeping the crowds attention. Most feedback from his set seemed to be negative; I relate this back to the crowd being slightly younger and the majority not having been truly exposed to this style of music. To top of a good set (in my opinion), he played his hit single 'Show me love' on the keytar which personally was a highlight of the night and this also reiterated my respect for Mobin Master as a musician. Klaas manned the stage the minute he was up there, it was evident through the crowds reaction they had turned up for a Klaas dance-off. His set mainly consisted of his own productions but with such a unique sound his set rarely journeyed out of his comfort zone. However he was able to read the crowd and played off their vibe resulting in the floor going crazy. Overall the night was good, with two international artists playing. This really helped Global get the publicity they wanted even if it wasn’t the most music-savvy crowd. What let the gig down however was the venue, with poor seating and far too much lighting this really detracted from the big picture. Overall Global gets a 4/10 on the Sidekick Nick scale, but Global is moving in the right direction. |
