Surfer Blood - 'Astro Coast'

When SURFER BLOOD appeared out of what-felt-like nowhere in 2009 with their debut single 'Swim', I don't think anyone expected the surprise hit they would have on their hands. Being awarded the title of 37th Best Track Of 2009 by Pitchfork, the bar of expectation for their debut album 'Astro Coast' was lofty. It's not surprising that the Floridian boys kept beachy Summer time vibes pumping throughout their debut... 'Floating Vibes' is not only my favourite named song from the album, its chilled-out yet exceptionally catchy guitar hooks also create for the perfect Summer road-trip anthem.

While some tracks - I'm looking at you 'Take It Easy' - sound like they could be a Vampire Weekend b-side, there are moments of beauty on 'Astro Coast' which help separate it from all the other indie-bands-of-the-moment which are clear influences. I guess to me, 'Astro Coast' is a little like taking a trip to a beach you’ve never been to before... the beach has got all the smells, sights and features of your usual beach, but there is something about it which stands out anyway, and makes the adventure - or in this case, listen - worth it!

MUST-LISTEN: 'Swim’, ‘Floating Vibes’, Harmonix’.
