#28. HOT HOT HEAT - Future Breeds

Hot Hot Heat

I have infinite patience for HOT HOT HEAT, having grown up on a steady diet of their 'Make Up The Breakdown' (2002) and 'Elevator' (2005) albums all throughout my teenage-hood. Although, who wouldn't be patient for a band that describes themselves as "sock-hop trash trash post-nu-spazz choral". Since Hot Hot Heat's major-label 'Happiness Ltd.' effort, it's been a bit of a ride for the band and fans alike, as their signature vigour was displaced amidst the polishing up and frontman Steve Bays' vocal yelps were ironed out.

But like all good things - you just need to be patient - Hot Hot Heat have come full circle somewhat. 'Future Breeds' is the band's first self-produced album and they seem to have taken their creative freedom as full license to mix every instrument at top volume... but it works. This is Hot Hot Heat no holds barred. Bays gleefully hurls the lyrics of each of the twelve tracks on the band's return to an independent label - and it sounds every bit as good as it evidently feels for the Canadian four-piece.

MUST-LISTEN: 'Nobody's Accusing You (Of Having A Good Time)', 'JFK's LSD', 'YVR', 'Times A Thousand'.
YOU WILL LIKE, IF YOU LIKE: Foals, Forgive Durden, Rooney, The Pigeon Detectives, The Futureheads... and the welcome sound of prodigal sons returning.
MUST-WATCH: Hot Hot Heat's 'JFK's LSD' music video...
