#12. SHE & HIM - Volume Two ![]() Although the sweet sounds of Zooey Deschanel on SHE & HIM's debut album 'Volume One' sounded promising, one can't be blamed for wondering if it was all just a triple-threat illusion... it all seemed too good to be true, the dreamy pairing of Deschanel backed by kinda-a-big-deal M. Ward and sentimental tunes that well... wouldn't have sounded amiss coming out of the mouth of the characters of Deschanel's filmography. But sometimes, true-blue good things just happen. On 'Volume Two', She & Him go for gold again. The band's second outing is just as wistfully nostalgic as their debut and as M. Ward has said himself, 'Volume Two' is "twice as good as 'Volume One'". Deschanel sounds more confident in her vocal abilities and even gets a little bit sassy on 'Over It Over Again' and a little bit political on 'Home'. Ward and Deschanel charmingly duet during the chorus of 'Lingering Still', a song in which Deschanel sagely notes that "he's never gonna know me if he doesn't want to just shake my hand..." Such illustrations of Zooey's lady-like moxie are precisely what make She & Him so endearing and subsequently, 'Volume Two' one of my most-played in 2010. MUST-LISTEN: 'Over It Over Again', 'Home', 'Lingering Still', 'Don't Look Back', 'In The Sun'. YOU WILL LIKE, IF YOU LIKE: Rilo Kiley, M. Ward, Ivy League, Feist, Kings Of Convenience... and the little blue cartoon birds that help dress Disney princesses. MUST-WATCH: She & Him's 'In The Sun' music video... the camera-hating M. Ward even cracks a bit of a smile during his guitar solo. ![]() |
