#11. ELLIE GOULDING - Lights ![]() Although a giant chunk of my heart belongs to ELLIE GOULDING, I can't help but wish her voice was stronger... maybe it's something that will come with further extended touring and vocal training. Goulding's debut album 'Lights' is the kind of flashy spectacular that you can't help but be cautious of - sure the girl is cute and all, but can she pull off the songs live? But distracting thoughts aside, the twenty-four year old is a well-deserved UK critics' favourite, being only the second artist ever to have won both the BBC's Sound Of (2010) poll and the BRIT Awards' Critics' Choice nod within the same year. Lead single 'Starry Eyed' makes me grind my teeth, but the rest of the 'Lights' album is truly top-notch. Goulding contemplates her vulnerability in 'This Love (Will Be Your Downfall)' and further wrestles with insecurities in the name of love in 'Every Time You Go' and 'Your Biggest Mistake'. You'll find yourself doodling Goulding's lyrics in the margins of your diary - and humming the synth-riffs of 'Lights' at all other times - yes, this album is really that brilliant. MUST-LISTEN: 'Wish I Stayed', 'Every Time You Go', 'The Writer', 'This Love (Will Be Your Downfall)', 'Your Biggest Mistake'. YOU WILL LIKE, IF YOU LIKE: The Bird And The Bee, Lights, Lykke Li, Passion Pit, La Roux... and lying on your back gazing at the night skyline while upside down.
