Jimmy Eat World - 'Invented'

When you’re one of the most influential and respected rock bands of this generation, there is a lot of pressure to perform. The level of expectation is near unimaginable. Somehow, they are meant to have the ability to know exactly what each and every single one of their fans want, marry that with what THEY want, yet somehow create an album which pleases everyone... a task that in reality, is never going to happen. Out of every band featured in our Top 50 of 2010, JIMMY EAT WORLD probably know this feeling best.

'Invented' is Jimmy Eat World’s seventh release, and while it’s received positive reviews critically, it has had a harder time winning approval from a portion of their fans - and I can understand (albeit disagree, with) why. People after another 'Bleed American' or 'Futures', were instead given an album which has a lot more room to breathe than any of the bands previous releases. Moving its way between low-key softer, acoustic led numbers ('Stop') to faster paced and heavier tracks ('Coffee And Cigarettes'), the addition of female guest vocalist Courtney Marie Andrews on the latter provides the cherry on top, complimenting Jim Adkins' flawless vocal delivery perfectly. ‘Action Needs An Audience’ should tickle older fans fancy - being that it is the first track since the band’s debut that original vocalist/now-guitarist Tom Linton has given his vocal talents to a song.

Lyrically, Adkins has once again shown why Jimmy Eat World have been able to sustain a high level of respect from fellow musicians and fans for so long. On 'Invented' the first words we hear are: "I can't compete with the clear eyes of strangers / I'm more and more replaced / By my friends each night..." There is a beauty in his simplicity - a way of expressing the most basic of thoughts in a way you’d never think of. In the stand out and amazingly beautiful seven minute title-track ‘Invented’, Adkins declares that "any dick can roll up in a suit, but only I would know what really moves you..." with a sultry and emotionally charged vocal delivery that many others vocalists would struggle to achieve. 'Invented' proves that Jimmy Eat World don’t need to hide between big rock tracks - even at their most stripped back they have nothing to hide and are a step above the rest.

For some fans, this album may take a few listens to get over their initial disappointment. And if that is you, I urge you to give the album another shot. To dismiss it, is to really miss out on what is a beautifully crafted orchestration of a band re-inventing and re-defining their own boundaries, creating some of the best music around without losing any of their personality.
