![]() Earlier today, Vulture debuted PATRICK STUMP's new song 'Explode', lifted from his forthcoming debut solo album, 'Soul Punk'. Recently, Stump answered a fan's question about what advice he would give to aspiring songwriters on his official Tumblr page. His answer sums up how I feel about 'Explode' quite nicely: "In second grade art class there was a lesson on ornamentation. The assignment was to draw the first letter of our last name and then decorate it beyond the point of recognizing the original letter…hiding it in a piece of art. In high school, a similarly vital school lesson was in Mr. Allen’s English class where he taught us to “Trim the fat,” in our writing, to be as concise as possible (obviously in blog responses I don’t expel that much energy in being succinct haha). Those two lessons: 1) How to hide meaning in art, and 2) How to express yourself with a loaded economy of words, those two things have changed my writing (and I notice them in all good writers). It’s because of those principles that good artists are able to sing songs about racism and disguise them as a songs about girls, or songs about war as songs about parties. If you can pack 3 different meanings into 2 words, you’ve got it made." Listen to Patrick Stump's new song 'Explode' below... 'Explode' lyrics: "Clap if you’ve got a ticket to the end of the world It was his last day on the force He was going through divorce He was a living breathing action screenplay cliche They said that they found it in the basement Enough to just blow that roof to the pavement And he was the man for the job, A one-man bomb squad A middle aged mess thinking: (chorus) “I feel like I’m gonna explode Any moment I’m ready to blow I can’t stand it, I get so worried I get so low But if I’m never your hero I can never let you down” And the sirens go “Oh ah oh ah” Their last hopes, on him they’d hung And they weighed him like a ton But perhaps for him he’d none much left to lose Tony, don’t sweat it Keep your hands steady You were born on a dare but you were born ready Cut the red wire Or was that the green wire? You’re on fire like: (chorus) And if this is it I want to go out with a bang But I don’t claim to know anything" |
