Take a look across message and bulletin boards in regards to the latest release from THE KILLS and you’ll soon see that 'Midnight Boom' hasn’t exactly become the stylistic sea-change that fans and critics were expecting it would be.
In saying that... It seems that The Kills have created their most accessible work to date, while the bands previous records “Keep Me On Your Mean Side” and “Now Wow” were roller-coasters of snarls and sexy licks and hooks, the duo’s minimalism always seemed to tip-toe on the edge of monochromatic.
Here on 'Midnight Boom' we see a flourish of rich colour and emotion translating into daring, dirty unapologetic pop songs. |
'MIDNIGHT BOOM' is kicked off by the dial tones, claps and sexy banter of 'U.R.A Fever'... Reminiscent of THE KILLS' previous work but also setting the platform for more possibilities, than before. Next is the hectically catchy 'Cheap and Cheerful', a song ready for the floor as it hums along with bounce, feeling young, free and rebellious. 'Last Day Of Magic' is another stand out track on the album, as Alison Mosshart sings the memorable “my little tornado” chorus, you can’t help but sing along by the time the second chorus rolls around and is a great pop number by all accounts.
The Kills also delve into a few ballad type numbers... One being the lovely 'Black Balloon' in which you can almost see the video play out in your minds eye as you listen. The other is the last track on the album and you couldn’t ask for a better way to finish out the record, 'Goodnight Bad Morning' has all the nostalgia of a Sunday morning after a big weekend out... and if you don’t like anything you’ve heard of The Kills before, it’s definitely worth the $1.79 off iTunes.
'Midnight Boom' glitters like diamonds... and crunches like broken glass. It is definitely a worthwhile listen and if you haven’t been seduced by their charms before, be prepared to fall in love. |
