The first announcement of Auckland’s inaugural St. Jerome’s Laneway festival knocked those of other, more established events out of the park. (Echo & The Bunnymen versus Muse? Come on!) The last handful of artists to be added to the already stellar Laneway line-up was revealed today at 8am. A drum-roll please, for the following:
Daniel Johnston
Hockey
Sarah Blasko
The Phoenix Foundation
Surf City
The Naked and Famous
Street Chant
Hockey
Sarah Blasko
The Phoenix Foundation
Surf City
The Naked and Famous
Street Chant

And there you have it: within that diverse selection of artists, there’s bound to be something for everyone. Legendary acts, such as Daniel Johnston, rub shoulders with up-and-comers destined for big things, like Sarah Blasko (recently dubbed ARIA Female Artist of 2009 – and by recently, I mean last week) and Hockey. Similarly, even within the microcosm of the New Zealand music scene, veteran performers The Phoenix Foundation share a bill with bright young things The Naked and Famous, Street Chant, and Surf City. The result is a mix of familiar and unknown; the confident panache of an established performer, contrasted with the youthful energy of one that’s got years on stage to look forward to.
Combined with the artists already listed in the festival’s line-up announcement and... well, you’ve got what will undoubtedly be the musical event of 2010. Florence & The Machine and the xx were among this year’s most original and successful musicians; the live performances of Echo & The Bunnymen and Dirty Three are widely regarded as legendary; and N. A. S. A. are among those making this century’s most future-forward sounds.
So, folks, we’ve brought you the artists: all that’s required of you is to get your ticket, and then, get yourself to Britomart Square for February 1st, 2010. What more can we say? It’s going to be big.
