The Swell Season

My first introduction to THE SWELL SEASON was a video I found on youtube of one of my favourite actors - Jason Segel - performing a song he had written, at a 'Swell Season concert in Los Angeles.

I loved the song and the melodies which he brought forth with the help of the band, so I began my click through of other 'Swell Season videos. A few songs in, and I had officially bought into the talent that is The Swell Season. Playing Auckland on the 23rd of March, the award winning duo are an act not to be missed - whether you are a fully fledged fan, or just an appreciator of talented musicians.

The Swell Season are a folk-rock duo formed by Irish musician Glen Hansard and classically trained Czech singer and pianist Marketa Irglova, who both rose to prominence after starring in the indie film 'Once', which earned them an Oscar award for Best Original Song for their single 'Falling Slowly' (and later, a parody of their characters from the film on 'The Simpsons').

Their latest album 'Strict Joy' - its title derived from a 1931 book of poems - reached number 15 on the Billboard 200, and details the heartbreaking and true life demise of Marketa and Glen's romance. On tour with Hansard's band The Frames as their backing musicians, the duo are set to amaze audiences with a 2 hour long set, with support from local act The Bads.

Sold out concerts worldwide have attracted little other than positive praise, and now New Zealanders are in for a treat, also known as The Swell Season. Tickets are on sale now at http://www.the-edge.co.nz/Event-Pages/S/Swell-Season.aspx ranging from $76.50 to $97.50.
