NOFX and Bad Religion

It’s time to dust off those vans in the back of your cupboard, pull out the Dickies shorts and find those white gym socks with the stripes on top which the washing machine ate a few years ago (you know the ones) – punk legends NOFX and Bad Religion are double teaming it, and bringing their political, pushy and often controversial shows to our shores for one night only in Auckland on October 4th.

It’s not often we get bands of this calibre in New Zealand… sure they haven’t appeared on our radio airwaves often, and most of the population quite likely has no clue who they are, but these musical masters have been rocking out before most of us knew what rocking was. With 26 studio albums between them, excluding the numerous EP’s, compilations and DVD’s, the saying ‘practice makes perfect’ has never seemed so fitting and their polished live performances are no exception.

Bad Religion - effectively the god fathers of the modern day punk movement – were established in Southern California in 1980 and have been signed to guitarist Brett Gurewitz’s label Epitaph Records since 1981 . Many bands within the punk scene, including NOFX, cite the band as major influences and with critically acclaimed albums such as 1988 release ‘Suffer’ among their impressive back catalogue, it is surprising to see a band with such longevity still active on the scene. As one of the headlining acts on this years Warped Tour, as well as relentless international touring, Bad Religion have the energy of 20 year olds, with 30 years experience behind them to make their shows all the more powerful.

Fellow Californians and punk scene legends, NOFX have been known to cause chaos and controversy since their inception. Forming in 1983, the band have since released 11 studio albums, with the 12th – ‘Coaster’- being released later this month. Having sold over 6 million records worldwide all whilst remaining on an independent label (Fat Wreck Chords), NOFX are one of the most successful independent bands of all time. Not bad for a band who has never been featured on MTV (by choice) and have received little to no play on commercial/mainstream radio.

This trip is not the first time either band has visited New Zealand, with both NOFX and Bad Religion receiving rave reviews from their previous visits. However, with both acts rocking out on stage on one night, it truly will be an evening to remember. Expect politics, truth, love, hate, laughter. Expect to be inspired. Expect anything. Expect everything.

Catch NOFX and Bad Religion at Auckland Town Hall, 4th of October at 8PM.
