![]() Big Day Out is over, Laneway is complete... Summer festivals have come and gone too quickly, right?! Wrong! SOUNDWAVE FESTIVAL in Australia is about as close to the U.S.A.’s Warped Tour as you can get, and it’s only a short plane ride away with a date in all of Aussie’s major cities. Dream come true? Pretty much. The 2011 line-up for Soundwave has really outdone itself, featuring a ridiculous amount of talent from the legendary IRON MAIDEN taking a two-hour headlining slot at the end of the day, to the newly re-united pop-punk icons THE STARTING LINE kicking things off early. Oh, and did I mention bands such as THIRTY SECONDS TO MARS, SLAYER, MILLENCOLIN, SUM 41, WE THE KINGS, THE MAINE, BAYSIDE, NEVER SHOUT NEVER, MAYDAY PARADE, SLASH, LESS THAN JAKE, PENNYWISE and many more are playing too?? Seriously. It’s that good! I personally haven’t been this excited since, well, last year's Soundwave which topped my favourite concerts of 2010 list HERE. Below is a list of a few bands that Coup De Main can't wait to see live! If you’re lucky enough to be going as well, let us know who you’re planning on seeing, or for those of you who haven’t decided to cross the ditch for what promises to be one of the best festival line-ups of the year, let us know who you want to hear about or better yet - buy a ticket and join us! ![]() THE STARTING LINE When Soundwave announced that recently reunited pop-punk legends The Starting Line were making their way to Australia for some of their first performances post-reunion, it sealed the deal for me. With over ten years of live experience, their album ‘Say It Like You Mean It’ was on constant rotation during my high school days, and when they announced their break-up I had put them in the ‘will never see’ basket. The song I’m hoping to hear live the most at Soundwave? - ‘A Goodnight’s Sleep’ from The Starting Line's debut. MUST-WATCH: The Starting Line's 'Bedroom Talk’ music video... THE GASLIGHT ANTHEM New Jersey rock band The Gaslight Anthem cemented their worth in the music scene with the release of ‘The ’59 Sound’ in 2008. Since then, the band has toured relentlessly and more recently released their third full-length ‘American Slang’, which received rave reviews from critics and fans alike. Vocalist Brian Fallon cites Bruce Springfield as an inspiration and influence, which is heard in their brand of old-school punk/rock fueled anthems. Fallon’s soulful rocker voice, when matched with the insanely tight instrumentals from the rest of the band, creates some of the rawest and most refreshing music around today. The Gaslight Anthem are definitely worth checking out if you like Springsteen, Against Me!, Chuck Ragan and Hot Water Music. MUST-WATCH: The Gaslight Anthem performing ‘The Spirit Of Jazz’ live on A Different Spin... BAYSIDE Long Island punk group Bayside have long been one of my favourites, and I can absolutely vouch for their incredible live performance as can any of their live videos on Youtube. Releasing their next album ‘Killing Time’ just a few days before Soundwave kicks off, the upbeat and catchy punk-rock style the quartet have established with their impressive back-catalogue is as strong as ever. In fact, I’d ever go so far as to say that ‘Killing Time’ may be their strongest release to date! If you’re a fan of good honest pop-punk, Bayside are well worth checking out at Soundwave this year. MUST-WATCH: Bayside performing ‘Already Gone’ live at the Mod Club... SILVERSTEIN It’s not uncommon to hear Canadian post-hardcore act Silverstein being referred to as the band keeping their genre alive. Why? Well if 2009’s epic release ‘A Shipwreck In the Sand’ didn’t tickle your fancy, perhaps their 2010 EP ‘Transitions’ will prove to you their worth. Currently in the process of finishing up their next full-length release, I’m hoping Soundwave will be a great testing ground for the Canadians to test out their new material in a live setting and give us a taste of what is to come. MUST-WATCH: Silverstein's ‘Smile In Your Sleep’ music video... NEW FOUND GLORY Anyone who went to their first New Zealand show at the Transmission Room last year, will tell you that there is not much which is more fun, exciting or energetic, as a New Found Glory live performance. Their ‘Not Without A Fight’ 2009 release proved that they still reign as scene heavyweights and with the release of their next full-length due in 2011, I’m hopeful Jordan and crew will give Soundwave concert-goers a preview of new material. And if they don’t, you’ll find me up the front singing ‘My Friends Over You’ as loud (and least painfully) as possible with a permanent smile across my face. Here’s hoping they recreate the fans-on-stage epic sing-a-long seen in the below video at this years event! MUST-WATCH: New Found Glory performing ‘My Friends Over You’ live at the 2009 Soundwave Festival... As well as these bands, Soundwave stages will be graced by many many more musicians who are at the top of their respective genres - some of which we will be profiling in the lead-up to one of the best Summer festivals our South Pacific neighbours have to offer.
