Ellen Melville was a renowned feminist and politician in this country. She openly encouraged women to join the political sphere and even did so herself. She died in 1946 and we gave her a shitty little town hall with a functional kitchenette, to say thanks. The good news is that the sound of our dear old Ethel spinning in her grave, will soon be drowned out by a veritable volley of underground pop anthems delivered by CUT OFF YOUR HANDS, COLLAPSING CITIES, BIONIC PIXIE, BRAND NEW MATH and Melbourne’s OH MERCY.

Thanks to Savvy Promotions, this all-ages show will see the mass exodus of under-18’s from the bench outside Queen Street’s Lippy, to a half-decent hangout (with a kitchenette!). The show is a line-up of late-teen big-love from some of New Zealand’s hottest bands of the moment – because, as Savvy says, a love of music doesn’t start at 18.

cut off your hands

Having played 10 years’ worth of shows in 1, pop-strut master-chiefs CUT OFF YOUR HANDS have been busy carving out a name for themselves overseas on the back of their critically acclaimed debut ‘You and I’. Front man Nick Johnson’s hips are the secret 5th band member; half Mick Jagger and all solid-gold performance. After receiving their masters in band-name alliteration, COLLAPSING CITIES have been waving the pop flag over-the-seas for the last year too; slaying them at Reading and Leeds festivals... and making it onto NME’s “10 hopes of the Near Future” list. The band’s “radio-friendly ramshackle” are aural wallpaper on Bfm and their domination of the indie globe, has only just begun.

In the woman’s corner BIONIC PIXIE is doing Melville proud; with her masterful electro-pop-rap fusion, custom made stage-wear and a penchant for mechanical mayhem.

The self-professed “Weapon of Parnell” joins the line-up in the form of BRAND NEW MATH, a proto-dance-punk (TRIPLE-DECKER-GENRE!) and from across the tickly-Tasman comes Melbourne four-piece OH MERCY, having returned from a tour with indie kings The Kaiser Chiefs... and are well-ready to deliver their trademark pop panache.

And did we mention it’s all ages? Start creating your alibis now under-18’s, because this is a pop treat you can’t afford to miss! And while I’m talking about affording things – the show’s only 15 DOLLARS!

Tickets on sale now from Event Finder. For those without a credit card; Giapo (at 291-297 Queen Street), is also selling tickets.
