Under The Mountain - Sophie McBride & Tom Cameron
When such a kiwi classic as 'UNDER THE MOUNTAIN' finds its way finally to the big screen... there is going to be a local fuss, for sure. Based on Maurice Gee's best-selling novel, Jonathan King of 'Black Sheep' fame and the Weta Workshop team have breathed new life into the 1979-published original. Featuring a twenty-eight member local cast, New Zealanders are introduced to bright young sparks SOPHIE MCBRIDE and TOM CAMERON, who star as the films twin protagonists.

COUP DE MAIN: How did you end up being cast in 'Under The Mountain'?

SOPHIE MCBRIDE:
It was a bit of a fluke, really.
TOM CAMERON: Basically, we went to an audition with each other - which is kind of cool.
SOPHIE: Yup, we auditioned together.
CDM: Were you friends before the audition?
TOM:
No, we'd never met each other.
SOPHIE: But we've known each other for two years now. It's been two years since the audition. I just wanted to get some money so I could go live in Wellington - which is where I am now. So I was like; oh I'll do some acting... and that was the first audition! It all kind of rolled on from there.
CDM: Sophie, where were you based before Wellington?
SOPHIE:
Auckland. Grey Lynn. So this is home! But it got me to Wellington, so I'm stoked. It's been a whirlwind. It was his [ Tom's ] first audition as well, so we're newbies relatively.
TOM: New to the acting game!

The Lovely Bones - Rose McIver

“Lindsey Salmon was another thing altogether. She was gifted, one of the twenty students from [the] school who had been selected for the statewide Gifted Symposium. The only trouble in her file was a slight altercation early in the year when a teacher reprimanded her for bringing obscene literature - Fear of Flying - into the classroom.” And so we have Lindsey Salmon described to us in Alice Sebold’s 'The Lovely Bones' - sister of the central character, who happens to be played by bright and every bit as gifted Kiwi actress ROSE MCIVER, in Peter Jackson's film adaptation.

McIver has been in countless film and television projects on a local basis, including 'Rude Awakenings' and 'Maddigan's Quest' - and now has the entire world at her feet with 'THE LOVELY BONES', where she stars alongside SAOIRSE RONAN ('Atonement'), MARK WAHLBERG ('Shooter') and RACHEL WEISZ ('The Fountain').

"It’s about coming to terms with it, and the kind of hope that gets found at the end of the story - and it can be seen as quite a positive, inspirational story as well."

Pushing Daisies set

Rule Number One: Don’t buy fish on a Monday. Rule Number Two: Don’t poke an angry German. Rule Number Three: 'PUSHING DAISIES' was the best looking show on television, and they’ve got the Emmy to prove it. 'Pushing Daisies' was a beautiful show that sadly lacked the deserved ratings to keep it alive... and after it died, there was no pie-maker to touch it back to life. One thing remains and that’s the precious bright look that was always somehow self-unaware – all courtesy of MICHAEL WYLIE; the show production designer... as unassuming and humble as the show itself.

Wylie won a Creative Arts Emmy for Best Art Direction at the 2009 awards, beating out popular and critical favourite 'Mad Men'.

COUP DE MAIN: Do you think that your name and work will always be associated with that glossy bright beauty that you brought to life (if you’ll excuse the phrase!) with 'Pushing Daisies'?
MICHAEL WYLIE:
I hope so! What happened on 'Pushing Daisies' doesn’t happen all of the time. There was such a confluence of inspiration that you rarely find; anywhere. The fact that I had worked with Barry Sonnenfeld and had a shorthand with him, and I got on immediately with Bryan Fuller and established a lot of trust really quickly, and the crew that was assembled had a real REAL understanding of this material and where the funny was and where the beauty was... Astonishing. I know we weren’t curing cancer or doing something brave, but for what we do I will always be happy to be associated with the show. (BTW, hopefully I won’t be that guy living in an alley behind a restaurant screaming “I designed Pushing Daisies” at passers-by!)

thomas lennon

"My muse is a tiny, fairy-like creature from Gnardgnanesh: a country that only exists if you wish it to. He's about 4 inches tall, greenish, and resembles a little twig."
- Thomas Lennon, to FHM.

That - is just the kind of man that Thomas Lennon, aka Lieutenant Jim Dangle of 'Reno 911!' - is.
Endearingly ridiculous... yet affably logical.
Logic of the kind, that can only be made sense of by the kid inside... who never grew up.
These school holidays, let Thomas Lennon as Ned Gold in '17 Again', entertain you with all of the paraphernalia that only a Silicon Valley King could fill his mansion with. We are talking characteristic lightsabers! Vulcan ears... and some Zac-Efron-pow-wow.
