CAMPBELL SMITH
was the chief executive officer of the Recording Industry Association of New Zealand, the founder of CRS Management and is the festival director for Big Day Out New Zealand.

Smith shares five pieces of career advice below...

1. Try lots of things in your twenties. It's all gathering experience. I didn't know what I wanted to do with any certainty until I was 30.

2. Shut up and listen. That's harder than it seems, 'cause you'll always think you know better. Then you get older and you realise you didn't know shit when you were younger, and you should have listened more to those with experience. Trust me.

3. If you want to work in the New Zealand music industry, you'd better love music beyond all reason and rationale. 'Cause it's a tiny local industry and it can be soul-crushingly hard to pay the rent. But, if you are passionate about what you're doing, who cares about rent.

4. It's all about scale. If you want to manage musicians, start by helping out friends' bands. None of you will know what you're doing, but you'll learn fast. If you want to be a promoter, put on shows for the friends' bands in your back yard, then the local cafe, bar etc. Before you know it, you'll be pushing 45,000 people into Mt. Smart stadium.

5. If you get the chance to marry one of your artists, do it. And don't do drugs.
