MURRAY BEVAN is the founder of the leading fashion and lifestyle PR agency 'SHOWROOM 22' - representing the likes of 'Karen Walker Jewellery', 'Kathryn Wilson', 'Deadly Ponies' and 'I Love Ugly'. Read his five pieces of career advice below... 1. Be prepared to get your hands dirty: There's no better way to learn the ropes than to work your way through a business from the ground up, so don't be too cool or too proud to do those little measly jobs. 2. Mistakes aren't always bad: If you're smart you'll learn something from every mistake you make. Don't be too proud to deny when you've slipped up - own up and move on. 3. Manage people's expectations of your work: If you're really gun-ho and promise the earth to a boss or a client, chances are you might fall short and let them down. Always sell yourself just short of what you know you can achieve, then when you over-deliver on the performance of the job you'll have a happy client. 4. Know your worth: Too many people these days undercharge for their services. Aside from the internships and favors most of us have to do to get a foot in the door, once people start coming to you for your service, make sure you know what it's worth. It's always a lot harder to raise your prices in the future than it is to give someone a discount once in a while. 5. Thrive on responsibility: The very best people I've worked with never shy away from responsibility. There's a saying that if you want something done, ask someone busy to do it. My experience tells me the people who aren't busy are often the ones moaning and bored. The busy ones are happy, motivated, skillful and they're learning all the time. Be that person! |
