Noted New Zealand photographer and videographer GARTH BADGER shares his five pieces of advice for all you aspiring photographers... 1. Edit your photos. The general public aren't interested in seeing every photo you have ever taken, less is more, only show the top few photos from your best shoots on your site or Facebook page. 2. Test / trial / experiment. You need to be shooting constantly, almost obsessively. If you want to do something new or different you can't expect to get it right first time especially if you are shooting for a client, you want to be ready and prepared 3. Shoot what you love. Your best work will be from shooting the subjects you are passionate about, some types of photography definitely pay better than others but ultimately we should be trying to get work in the field that we are passionate about. Otherwise it will start to feel like a job! 4. Keep up to date. Photography is always changing as the technology changes, keep up to date with the new camera's computer programs and equipment. Even if you can't afford to buy it just yet, if you are driven enough you will be buying it in no time and you need to know what to get! 5. Assist / Intern. There is so much you can learn from established photographers and so much they are willing to teach. The things I learnt in my assisting / Interning days I use every day and I wouldn't have learnt them any other way. Its like free university! It also gives you great insight into what field of photography you might like to specialize in yourself. |
