In case you haven't heard, the 90s are back. That means denim jackets, which of course means decorating your denim jacket with pins. Look no further than Georgia Perry's vivid and distinct pins! She makes a variety of designs - from Seinfeld characters, to Kim and Kanye, to fried eggs and bananas. True fact: we love them so much that we used them in our recent cover-shoot with Alessia Cara.
We spoke to Georgia Perry about her designs, inspiration, and her bucket-list...
COUP DE MAIN: Your style is gorgeously vivid and eye-catching, what would you say is your primary inspiration for your designs and illustrations?
GEORGIA PERRY: I don’t like anything overly complicated or decorative - simple flat shapes and bright colours have always just felt best to me. I find inspiration for my work anywhere / everywhere. In travelling to new places, reading, watching films, getting drunk with my friends... the more experiences you have to draw from the better.
CDM: Did you always know that art was going to be in your future?
GEORGIA: Definitely. Both my parents were artists, and it’s something that’s always been a part of my life. I always enjoyed creative subjects at school and stuff - so I was excited when I found out what “graphic design” was, and realised that I could actually make a living doing this stuff.
CDM: I love your pins! What inspired you to design pins? They’ve got such a retro/nostalgia feel to them.
GEORGIA: I’d always loved collecting enamel pins - they definitely feel nostalgic to me... like lost souvenirs, or something you’d find in your Mum’s jewellery box from the 70s. I thought they would be a good (tiny!) canvas for my graphic, colourful aesthetic. Now it’s become a movement!
CDM: Do you have a favourite pin you’ve made so far?
GEORGIA: The sardine tin is a favourite - and the new fried egg is super cute. I love food-based accessories! Larry David is also a winner - I think everyone needs to embrace their inner Larry.
CDM: I love your celebrity pins - obviously we love the Seinfeld ones so much! What made you decide to start making them?
GEORGIA: I’m a little obsessed with pop-culture. Between work, the internet, TV, Netflix... It's basically impossible to escape from it. I just thought it would be funny to distill some of those ubiquitous names and faces into an accessory you can wear. They're kind of like tiny emblems of a point in time and culture. And a pretty great conversation-starter.
CDM: If you could only do one thing for the rest of your life, would what be that one thing?
GEORGIA: Pretty much! I’m lucky in that I love getting up and going to “work” everyday. Especially now I’ve started doing my own products - there is always something new and fun to dream up / work on, so I wouldn’t change much about life right now, to be honest!
CDM: What do you have left to achieve on your bucket-list?
GEORGIA: Invent something useful, travel to India, have dinner with Beyonce & Jay-Z.
