I meet Billie Eilish for the very first time backstage at Auckland’s Tuning Fork, a restaurant turned occasional music venue, ahead of her debut sold-out show in New Zealand, which is taking place a 13-hour flight from her hometown of Los Angeles. Her mother Maggie Baird (who is currently doubling as both tour manager and OSH supervisor) is in the middle of explaining to me, “She's always singing! I try to tell her to save her voice,” as a humming Eilish returns to her dressing room, disregards Baird's pleas, and proceeds to DJ herself jams to sing along to via her iPhone.
